In the spring of 2009
there was a Edmonton News report on TV on how a
school in Belize was helped by a high school in
Calmar (Town just outside of Edmonton). In
the news report it showed the Belize teacher
using jumper cables attached to a vehicles
battery to power a laptop for the school.
I said to my wife we can do better and ending up calling a
colleague of mine Randy Rogers with Telco Power
and Battery and a former council member of
Calmar to see if he could get a hold of the
school.
Stephen Lindop the Principal of Calmar school was delighted to hear
from us and had indicated that another trip was
planned in November where some of the students
and himself were heading back. Both Randy
and myself were interested in donating batteries
and solar panels so that the Belize teacher did
not have to use jumper cables anymore.
Following our discussion with Stephen, we thought it best to do a
class with the students of Calmar school in June
2009 on how an off grid system goes together.
This way they in turn would be able to show the
Belize students.
Below are pictures of trip Stephen and the Calmar students did in
November 2009. Also we included LED Lights
that the school can now be used at night.
